Overview
Robot-Assisted Prostate Surgery
Robot-Assisted Hysterectomy
Facing any kind of urologic surgery creates a great deal of anxiety for most men. You want the most experienced surgeons and the least invasive surgical options out there. You want to get rid of the cancer, but you also want your body to function normally following surgery.

You may be a candidate for a new, less invasive approach to prostate removal called the da Vinci® Prostatectomy. The da Vinci Prostatectomy incorporates the latest advancements in robotic-assisted technology and allows a surgeon greater visualization, enhanced dexterity, precision, control and superior ergonomics. These factors could result in more complete eradication of cancer and retention of bladder control and potency.

Traditionally, a radical prostatectomy to treat prostate cancer required a large, 8- to 10-inch incision. The procedure commonly resulted in substantial blood loss, lengthy recovery and the risk of impotence and incontinence. Conversely, a prostatectomy using the da Vinci Surgical System provides access to the internal anatomy through five small incisions.

For qualified candidates, the da Vinci Prostatectomy offers numerous potential benefits over the traditional open prostatectomy, including:

  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Less pain
  • Less risk of infection
  • Less blood loss and transfusions
  • Less scarring
  • Faster recovery
  • Quicker return to normal activities

For many patients approaching surgery, it is often difficult to visualize what is entailed in a specific surgical procedure. To give prospective da Vinci Prostatectomy patients a better understanding of the advances made by robotically-assisted minimally invasive surgery, we have produced the following video presentation. This video offers a three-dimensional simulation of the male reproductive anatomy, the enabling technology - the da Vinci Surgical System - and the procedure itself.

As with any surgical procedure, these benefits cannot be guaranteed, as surgery is both patient- and procedure-specific.
