Robot-Assisted Prostate Surgery
Any kind of urologic surgery creates a great deal of anxiety for most men. You want the most experienced surgeons and the least invasive surgical options out there. You want to get rid of the cancer, but you also want your body to function normally following surgery. Traditionally, a radical prostatectomy to treat prostate cancer required an 8-10 inch incision, which commonly resulted in substantial blood loss, lengthy recovery and the risk of impotence and incontinence. Fortunately, the da Vinci® Surgical System offers a less-invasive option.
Why choose Robotic-Assisted Prostate Surgery?
Benefits can include:
- Shorter hospital stay
- Less pain
- Less risk of infection
- Less blood loss and transfusions
- Less scarring
- Faster recovery
- Quicker return to normal activities
As with any surgical procedure, these benefits cannot be guaranteed, as surgery is both patient- and procedure-specific.
Why choose USMD?
USMD Hospital was the first facility in the DFW area to offer the extraordinarily precise da Vinci® Robot Surgical System for the prostatectomy, and is home to the most experienced robotic team in Texas.
The Prostate & Cancer
This year in the United States, almost 180,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. This is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the tissues of the prostate, a gland in the male reproductive system just below the bladder and in front of the rectum. The gland, which is about the size of a walnut, surrounds the urethra (the tube that empties urine from the bladder) and produces fluid that makes up part of the semen. Treatment options and prognosis depend on the stage of the cancer, the Gleason score, and the patient's age and general health. Before deciding on a treatment, it’s important to understand all your options. Fortunately, new advances in medical technology are enabling cancer patients to go on to live active and productive lives after their treatment.
